South Africa won the Miss World for the first time in 1958 (four years after winning in Egypt), when Penelope Anne Coelen (born 1940) took the crown. Penelope is the second African woman to receive the title.

 

After becoming Miss World in 1958, she tried her luck in Hollywood but failed the screen test. She continues to run her own clothing line and supports beauty products, especially perfumes.

In 1974, thanks to Anneline Kriel (born 1955) at the Riyal Albert Hall in London, England, South Africa won its second championship. In 1974, Helen Morgan of the United Kingdom resigned only four days after her victory. She became Miss World in 1974 and became the second woman in the UK to receive the title at the age of 19.

 

South Africa won its third championship in 2014, when Rolene Strauss (born 1992) won the competition in London, England.
